If you want to contact Jose, I just give you his complete name. See if you can find him around the cyberglobal world. If not, let me know and I will try to find him. Jim worked at Humosa in telecommunications. Would love to hear from M.R. Was at TJ from Jan 69 to Jun 71. Worked in Admin of 307th. Lived on base and had an apt in Madrid with other guys from 441MMS and 307th. Hung out at the outdoor cafes on gran via and at the mesones (meson de las austrias & de championes)trolling for tourists and "junior yr aboard" girls; also went to Stones Club & other dicoteques and some bar americanos; dated a spanish girl for about a year before I left. The experience changed my life. Learned spanish, returned to college, got BS & earned a International MBA from Univ of So Carolina, was an int'l banker & worked for American Express. It all started in Madrid. I teach college now and tell them "what happened in Madrid, stays in Madrid". It was a great time and a great experience.

I also have some pictures of the "Wall of China" made of beer cans at my house. Mayte and I Live in Long Island, NY and "snowbird" to St. Lucie Florida. Hope you check this site from time to time. I just found it. The last time I was in Madrid, they were closing the Meson de Las Austrias and remodeling it for something else. What a shame. Great memories there! We were at Torrejon from Febrary 1958 until July 1961. I was in the 49th Communications Squadron (SAC) and worked as a teletype operator in the SAC Relay Center. I also worked in downtown Madrid in the Communications Center in the Spanish Air Ministry. We were one of the first families to occupy the brand new apartments in Encinar de los Reyes (Royal Oaks) We enjoyed Madrid and later returned for a tour at Moron/San Pablo in Sevilla from September 1963 until Jun 1967. We also enjoyed Sevilla and have traveled all around Spain. Would like to hear from anyone familiar with Spain in those early years.

I was lucky to spend 12 years active duty in Spain. First assignment was ZAB from '79-'83 in 406 CAMS as an AGE tech and supv. Met and married my wife Carmen there. Next was TJ from '90-'94, first in 401 EMS as an AGE CAT Leader and then Branch Chief until '92 when the TFW left, then in 625 CAMS/ALSS as AGE Branch Chief until '94 when we moved the AMC en route to Rota. Last was Rota from '94-'98 in 625 AMSS as AGE and Sortie Support Flight Chief. Now I'm retired and live in Florida and Germany, and spend several months a year living with/visiting my wife's family in Spain (where I am sitting as I type this). We still have many friends here, some Spanish and some former/retired military. We enjoy the food, wine, the beaches, and traveling. Of course it's quite a bit more expensive now compared to the old days, especially with the weak dollar vs the euro. But there are still a lot of great things here. I think the majority of people that were stationed here liked it and would come back if they could...

I have to echo the Chief's words of thinking the majority of the people that were stationed here in Spain liked it and would come back if they could...

I was in TJ from 81 - 85 and loved it. I got out of the USAF in 89 after 8 years and came back to Spain. TJ is gone, but I was able to land at Moron AB near Sevilla. Love the place and live the life many probably thought about when stationed at TJ.

Allen Atwood Tuesday, 26 October 2010 02:52
I also was stationed at ZAB from 75-78, worked at Det 9, 67ARRS as the detachment clerk. I also married a woman from Zaragoza whose father worked on the bus that ran from the base to town. We currently live in Barrio de la Jota in Zaragoza and also have an apartment in Salou. I am on FB.

I think I remember you Mr. Horn,...our Maintenance Analysis office was next to yours, Programs and Mobility I think. I worked there from Sep 81 to Sep 84. My supervisor was Raymond Wagner and later Joe Avalos. For shop chief, I had Aloysius Pollack, then Robert Corchado, then James Greenleaf. You worked for Capt Camacho then Capt Harris later on.
I had a good time it was the best assignment in my 24 year career that ended up here in Elmendorf AFB Anchorage, Alaska in 2003. I have retired here and have been working for the US Postal Service.
It would be great to visit the base again and beautiful Spain as well.

I was the Commander of the 2186 Communications Squadron, Torrejon Air Base, Spain, from July 1983 to October 1986 and assigned to the 401st TFW as the Communications Electronics and Air Traffic Control Commander. You were my commander - TJ was my first assignment. I still have pictures of you and your family and some ski place we went my first month there in December 1985 smile I remember that everyone in the dorms liked you b/c you had a good sense of humor. We had some board up in the hallway, and a few of us changed the letters around to say "Welcome to Wally World." You popped in a couple of days later and saw it - and you thought it was pretty funny. Scored big points with us! My old roommate, Lisa Johnson (still friends with her) worked in the chapel as the chapel guide. She just went back in the service after being out for over 10 years! Hope you're well. I'm on Facebook.

I worked for Revlon at the BX from 72-77. I am looking for Muriel Cohen whom I worked directly for. Her husband, Georges was the base librarian. If any one has any information, please let me know. We LOVED our tour at Torrejon!

Sue Champlin Wednesday, 10 August 2016 08:07
I worked in the TJ AAFES BX in the office as the BX Secretary from 1978-1985. I was very close to Muriel. I have lost contact with her and really would like to find her. Her husband died while I was there. I do not remember what year. It was very hard for her. I would enjoy hearing if U have connected with her.

Debey Zeman Saturday, 24 September 2016 22:29
Hi Sue, just seeing your response. Have tried on numerous times to find Muriel, even trying to find her son Michael. Muriel sent me a letter years ago and she had changed her name to Muriel Cowen-Young. If and when either you or I find her, we WILL have a reunion. Keep me posted on your end. Don't see too many folks from the 60's; I was at Torrejon from Aug 66 to Feb 70 (yep, I extended 6 more months). Worked in Personnel (Assignments), lived downtown near Univ of Madrid, partied a bunch in the clubs situated around the "tombs"; we also had some great base tackle football and basketball teams too! I retired in l986, now living and working (investment banking) in Atlanta. If there are any of you 60's folks out there, give me a shout out!! Adios

Hello everybody! I was at TJ from July 1984 to July 1987 and work in the receiving section of the Supply Squadron. Hoping that somebody remembers me (hard to forget!). Please drop me a line if you do. Also, I was assigned to the flightline when I arrived and then cross trained into Supply in 1985. I met a guy that was an F-16 crew chief at the branch I worked at and we became good friends, he was even at my wedding in 1986. His name is Danny McClain (spelling I'm not entirely sure of). Last I heard from him was when he was leaving TJ and going to New Mexico or Arizona. Any help on this? Thanks all! TJ was the best!

Arrived Christmas 70 through May 74, FSP. Would be nice if we could get our own web site just for the 625th. Might be fun!

Bob Rivers Wednesday, 27 June 2012 00:32
Hi, Dave,

I arrived at TOJ on 4/4/68 and left in February 1970. You and I played on the 625 MASS softball team together. I was a Lt. in the transportation section. I remember Sgt. Clyde Keller and and Sgt. Juno (Juneau?) from Maintenance. Also Lt. Jim Mayer, Sgt. Shinpaugh, Col. Patton, etc. I'm in Tallahassee, Fl now. Would like to hear from you.

Bob Rivers

Dave Agusta Tuesday, 10 June 2014 21:35
Bob,
Sorry for the very late response. I haven't been on the site in awhile. Great memories of my time in the 625th and I remember all the guys you mentioned. I was on Sgt Keller's flight and was friends with Juneau. Unfortunately, Claude Keller passed as did Roland Juneau's wife Sylvia. We had a mutual friend who was in Mainteneance Control, Charlie Thomas. My email is dagusta99@gmail.com and I'm in Colorado now. Hope to hear from you.

You're the first person that I've heard mention that slogan. I was at TJ from Jan 69 to Jun 71 in Admin in 307th. I remember that they changed the slogan when we failed the base inspection and they fired the base commander and brought in a new hard-as commander. Thanks for reminding me.

I was stationed at Torrejon AFB June 1962-June 1966, base civil engineering group. Joe Kwiatkowski, was also there. I was at Palomares for the Broken Arrow and at Zaragoza for the closing process.

Charles Casebeer, M.D. Sunday, 14 February 2010 20:42
I was the last medical officer at Zaragoza before the closing in late 1965. Sent PCS to Torrejon and then back to ZAB TDY. I was the medical officer for Camp Wilson also so we have probably met each other. Left TJ August 68 to return to civilian life. Now retired in Montana. Torrejon was THE BEST!!!

Jerry Mazza Sunday, 7 July 2013 01:54
I left Zaragoza to go to Palomares, then PCS to South Dakota in June 1966. When I was at Zaragoza the only officer I can remember was a Lt. short with blond hair. I think he was the only on the base. Spent 3.5 years at Torrejon, 1962-66. It is the best as is M.adrid.

Stationed at T.J. from Aug 78 to Aug 1980. I worked as an F-4 crew chief of the 613th AMU, 401 OMS. TDYed to Aviano and Incirlik. Learned to shoot pool at the La Cita rec center. Loved Lake Sacedon, Benidorm and the tosca bars in Torrejon during the summer. I'll never forget the bull fight I went to in Alcala on my 21st birthday. Would love to hear from anyone who was there with me.

Spent nearly 3.5 years (Jun 80 - Nov 83)at TJ as an INS troop on F4D in the 401 CRS then in the 612 AMU (401 AGS). I left Torrejon whren teh last F4 left for Getafe on a flatbed truck. The F-16's had picked up the missions to ICDI and Aviano and the F4's were quickly being retired worldwide.

I liked Spain so much I brought some back with me. We've been married 26 years. I'm thinking it might last.

Got off of AD in 1986 and joined the CA ANG as a C-130 Nav. I went back to TJ on numerous airlift missions always trying to get to Madrid ASAP for teh food and nightlife.

TJ was my 1st assignment out of Keesler. I loved it. It set the stage for life with my Spanish bride and a great AF career.

Bill Deater Monday, 14 November 2011 14:40
Hi Mark. I have an idea we worked together at TJ. I was in the Instrument/Autopilot shop in CRS from 81-83. My name is Bill Deater. Some of the other guys in the shop were Jeffery Bispham, Lynn Gaehle, John Morrison and Randy Lake. If I remember right, one of my good friends while I was there worked in the INS shop, Dickie Hawkins. We had a lot of great times together. I PCS'd to Alconbury, England from TJ and then finished out my career at Davis-Monthan in Tucson, AZ.

My father, Steven Moody, was stationed at Torrejon in the late 1960s. He met my mother, Judy Goddard, there, and they were married in Madrid and on the base in the spring of 1969. Her father was a COL or LTCOL Goddard in the AF JAG Corps.

I am trying to find her now--she left not long after I was born, and remarried an Air Force man named Henry Nicholas or Henry Nichols, and I have not seen her for nearly 40 years (I will be 40 this year). I arrived at Torrejon on December 29, 1969 right out of admin tech school. As it was yesterday, I remember vividly 39 years ago, getting off the plane on the flight line and experiencing nice warm rain which was a plus coming from extreme cold McGuire AFB.
I was assigned to the 401st Civil Engineering Squadron from December 1969 through June 1973; working first in the orderly room for 1st Sgt Thomas H. Williams; then went to work for TSgt Harold W. Morris; then finally spent my final time with the Fire Department. Some of the wonderful people I remember is Dale Chabot (who taught me how to drink whiskey); Rudy Gallegos and my roommate (Paul Ramirez). Good friends with MSgt at the time Bobby Waldo. In my off duty time; spent alot of time coaching Little League baseball and other youth sports and enjoyed Madrid immensely.
Those 3 1/2 years at Torrejon will always go down as a most wonderful experience; especially made by the wonderful people I had met.

I was stationed at Torrejon from Dec 67 to Dec 70. I was a Medic in the 401st Hospital. My last 2 years I mostly worked the Emergency Room, however, I did spend some time as an "Independent Medic" out with the Communications squadrons out on the Baleric Islands and up in the Pyrrenes Mountains.

Met my wife, Joyce, @ Torrejon. She was a dependent and had just graduated my the base High School in 1970.

Hola John,
We were both stationed at 1989Comm Sq nearly the same time. I was there from 1/1968 - 7/1973. I worked at NCMO & the Telephone Exchange. I am sure we ran into each other on base, or at Stone's in Madrid.
